what i'm into

here's what i'm reading, playing, watching, and generally enjoying right now.

7/23/2024 - created the page, added webcomics section with links.

webcomics

i've been enjoying a lot of webcomics lately, but particularly:

tiger, tiger by petra nordlund - gorgeous art with a fun story and characters so lovable i get a little upset when the plot happens to them. it helps that the plot is so engaging. this is building towards an explosive close i'm so excited for!

kingfisher by rowan maccoll - i fell in love with this artist's OCs on tumblr and then found kingfisher, and i'm so glad i did. gorgeous, loose, sketchy art conveys a great series of paranormal mysteries set in the 1920s. definitely check it out-- there's a good backlog to work through.

bicycle boy by jackarais - the art of bicycle boy starts gorgeous and just gets more and more stunning as you read towards the latest updates. the post-apocalyptic world created in the comic is detailed and harrowing.

movies

i'm a big fan of horror movies, despite the fact i hated them when i was younger. i'm still catching up on the "classics" so to speak. you can check out a fairly up-to-date log of what movies i've watched on my letterboxd, but here are some recent highlights:

event horizon - a classic i hadn't seen yet, i liked that the tone sat somewhere between 2000s goofy action films and alien. an all-time Weird Guy performance from sam neill. loved it.

the taking of deborah logan - i've heard about this one forever but hadn't sat down to watch it. i was pleasantly surprised by some of the moves this possession horror movie made. i don't know that it entirely succeeds as a story, but it's an unsettling thrill ride.

the mist - this was a funny watch with my partner, who knows stephen king mostly by reputation. given how many different horror movies we've watched recently, king's specific character archetypes and favorite beats stood out in a really funny way. i did appreciate that the ending of this film is unrelentingly bleak despite being a little overwrought.
